VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (VWN), an organization dedicated to defending refugee rights and guiding them through the asylum process, is now facing a critical threat due to abrupt budget cuts.

On January 2, 2025, a sudden decision was made to reduce VWN’s Legal Protection Program budget from €34 million to €13 million. This decision is not merely a financial adjustment; it is a direct threat to the fundamental rights of refugees seeking protection in the Netherlands.
The impact of these cuts includes:
- A More Difficult Asylum Process:
With inadequate legal support, more initial asylum applications will be rejected. This will lead to more legal appeals, increased costs, and additional bureaucratic congestion. - Violation of Human Dignity:
Refugees, who must recount their traumatic stories, will be left to navigate this emotionally challenging process alone, further exacerbating their psychological distress. - Damage to Social Equality:
These cuts will make the most vulnerable individuals even more defenseless. The exclusion of refugees could lead to greater polarization within society.
VWN Chairman Frank Candel expressed his concerns:
